Single-field validation is where regex starts. The pain begins when one pattern has to recognise a structure with several parts, some optional, some with alternatives, and hand back each part as a separate value. That is the job behind parsing access logs, pulling settings out of free-form config strings, or turning a vendor's "almost CSV" export into rows. Our gateway log parser had grown into one 230-character line where nobody could tell which group was the latency field. After rewr...
Composing complex regex from small parts to extract many fields from text
Writing a 200-character regex in one go is how parsing bugs are born. We build patterns the way we build code: named parts, explicit groups, alternation that stays contained, lookaheads for extra rules, then extract every field from log lines and key=value strings with tests that keep it honest.

I am a Senior Software Engineer with over a decade of hands-on experience building, scaling, and maintaining complex systems across the full stack—spanning frontend, backend, and DevOps. Over the last 10 years, I have navigated diverse architectures and untangled some of the most frustrating, elusive bugs in production. I believe that every production incident is a massive learning opportunity. Having discovered hibug.me, I am excited to contribute to this knowledge base, breaking down root causes, and sharing verified fixes to help fellow developers debug faster and build more resilient systems.
